About The Position

This is a statewide departmental promotional examination for the position of Police Captain (1YP). Candidates must be employees in specific Massachusetts Police Departments with permanent civil service status in eligible titles and have served in the force for at least one year in that eligible title. The examination will assess knowledge of constitutional law, Massachusetts General Laws, rules and regulations, police procedures, community policing, and police supervision. It will also evaluate judgment, decision-making, accountability, adaptability, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Requirements

  • Be an employee in one of the specified Massachusetts Police Departments (Brockton, Malden, Newton, Quincy, Somerville, Springfield).
  • Hold permanent civil service status in the specified eligible title(s) (Police Lieutenant, or Police Officer with one year of permanent experience after police academy completion) by the date of the examination.
  • Have served in the force at least one year since appointment and performed the job duties of the eligible title(s). A combination of temporary and permanent service can be applied.
  • Complete the online application and pay the $150 examination processing fee by the deadline.
  • Complete the 2026 Statewide Police Captain Promotional Examination E&E Claim application online.
  • Maintain accurate contact information.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates who have been approved for an examination fee voucher may record redeeming the voucher on the application.
  • Current military personnel requesting a makeup opportunity should visit Civil Service Military Makeup Examinations.
  • Individuals who have 25 years of service as a member of a regular municipal police force in Massachusetts and have passed an examination for promotional appointment in such force may qualify for promotional preference points.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the duties of a Police Captain in conformance with the rules and regulations of the Police Department.
  • Perform all duties assigned by a higher rank up to the Chief of Police in every phase of police work.
  • Perform related work as required.
