About The Position
This is a statewide departmental promotional examination for Police Sergeant (1YP-451). Candidates must be employees in one of the specified Massachusetts Police Departments with permanent civil service status in an eligible title and have at least one year of service in that title by the examination date. The examination will assess technical knowledge, situational judgment, performance in an assessment center, and experience and education. The resulting eligible list will be valid for a period determined by the administrator, not exceeding two years unless otherwise specified by law or policy.
Requirements
- Be an employee in one of the specified Massachusetts Police Departments.
- Have permanent civil service status in the specified eligible title(s) by the date of the examination.
- Have served in the force at least one year since appointment and performed the job duties of the eligible title(s). A combination of temporary and permanent service from a certification can be applied towards meeting this one-year requirement.
- Complete the online application and pay the examination processing fee by the deadline.
- Maintain accurate contact information.
Nice To Haves
- Individuals who have 25 years of service as a member of a regular municipal police force in Massachusetts and have passed an examination for promotional appointment in such force may receive two preference points.
Responsibilities
- Under supervision, to perform the duties of a Police Sergeant in conformance with the rules and regulations of the Police Department.
- To perform all duties assigned by a higher rank up to the Chief of Police in every phase of police work.
- To perform related work as required.
