About The Position

Under the general supervision of a superior police officer, supervises officers and civilian personnel and participates in activities of assigned area of responsibility; does related work as required. This role involves supervising, scheduling, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of assigned personnel, both sworn and civilian. The Sergeant supervises officers responsible for criminal investigations and patrol, responds to critical incidents, and assists in coordinating personnel activities. Responsibilities include supervising the collection and preservation of evidence for court presentations, interpreting laws, rules, and regulations to subordinates, and reviewing reports prepared by subordinates. The Sergeant also supervises the continuous training and development of personnel, follows up on special assignments to ensure completion, and meets and confers with members of the community regarding public safety issues. Additional duties may include interrogation of suspects, interview of witnesses, surveillance, preparation of search and seizure warrants, keeping records, submitting periodic reports to superiors, and maintaining liaison with City departments and other agencies. May also supervise clerical and record keeping functions.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of Department rules, regulations and policies.
  • Good knowledge of modern principles and practices of police administration.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws, City regulations and ordinances, and court decisions.
  • Ability to plan, direct, coordinate and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Ability to analyze situations and information and make proper judgments.

  • Skill in the use and care of firearms and in the operations of motor vehicles.
  • Sufficient strength, endurance and agility to perform duties of the class.
  • Working knowledge of City resources.
  • Must have served a minimum of four (4) years as a Police Officer as of the date of the test for Sergeant.
