About The Position

This is a statewide departmental promotional examination for Police Sergeant (1YP-541). Candidates must be employees in specific Massachusetts Police Departments with permanent civil service status in eligible titles and have at least one year of service in that title by the examination date. The examination will assess technical knowledge, situational judgment, assessment center performance, and experience/education. The resulting eligible list will be valid for up to two years.

Requirements

• Be an employee in one of the specified Massachusetts Police Departments.
• Have permanent civil service status in the specified eligible title(s) by the date of the examination.
• Have served in the force at least one year since appointment and performed the job duties of the eligible title(s) by the date of the examination.
• A combination of temporary and permanent service from a certification can be applied towards meeting this one year requirement.
• Complete the online application and pay the examination processing fee by the deadline.
• Complete the 2026 Statewide Police Sergeant Promotional Examination E&E Claim application online.

• Time spent working in the title of Police Sergeant will not interrupt the service period in your permanent position.

Responsibilities

• Perform the duties of a Police Sergeant in conformance with the rules and regulations of the Police Department.
• Perform all duties assigned by a higher rank up to the Chief of Police in every phase of police work.
• Perform related work as required.

Benefits
