About The Position

The Erie Police Department is seeking individuals who aspire to a career in law enforcement to join their growing department and community as a Police Cadet. This role is for candidates who are NOT P.O.S.T. Certified and will be sent to a P.O.S.T. accredited Law Enforcement Academy in Colorado. The academy begins in January 2027 and lasts approximately 18-22 weeks. Upon successful graduation and attainment of Colorado P.O.S.T. certification, the Cadet will transition to a Police Officer position. This transition includes a four-week in-house mini academy and a 14-week Field Training and Evaluation program. The Town of Erie covers the academy costs and pays cadets an hourly wage during their academy attendance.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age by P.O.S.T. certification and the attainment of the Basic Peace Officer Certification through Colorado P.O.S.T.
  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License
  • Must be a High School graduate or have the G.E.D. equivalent
  • Candidates must successfully graduate from the Academy and attain the Colorado P.O.S.T. certification.
  • Must pass Recruiter Phone Screen.
  • Must pass Law Enforcement Exam.
  • Must pass Physical Agility Testing.
  • Must pass Oral Board Interview.
  • Must pass Conditional Job Offer.
  • Must pass Personal History Statement (PHS) and Release of Information Agreement.
  • Must pass Background Investigation.
  • Must pass Polygraph.
  • Must pass Interview with the Chief of Police.
  • Must pass Medical Exam.
  • Must pass Psychological Exam.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to priority calls regarding public disturbances, criminal, civil, or emergency situations.
  • Provide emergency medical assistance, control traffic, and ensure public safety.
  • Detect and prevent criminal activities through surveillance of assigned areas.
  • Investigate crime scenes or accidents and assist other officers.
  • Protect evidence, take testimony from witnesses, and assist detectives.
  • Enforce traffic laws and vehicle codes, and promote traffic safety.
  • Direct traffic, report unsafe road conditions, and promote vehicular and pedestrian safety.
  • Prepare a variety of daily reports and logs.
  • Provide a variety of related police services, including prisoner transport, motorist assistance, and mediation of family disturbances.
  • Conduct or assist with in-depth investigations involving felonies or other serious offenses and work closely with District Attorneys.
  • Conduct community-oriented policing activities, including participating in Erie’s Community Police Academy, engaging with businesses and the community, working with community groups, and conducting welfare checks.
  • Prepare and provide testimony in court and work with prosecution attorneys.
  • Provide code enforcement and animal control activities as needed.
  • Issue appropriate citations and take immediate actions to mitigate problems and disputes.
  • At advanced levels, may be assigned as a Field Training Officer.
  • Special Assignments Include: School Resource Officer (SRO), K-9 Officer, Traffic Detective.
  • Collateral Duties Include: Field Training Officer (FTO), Drone Officer, Bike Patrol, SWAT, Honor Guard, LGBTQ+ Liaison, Peer Support.
