About The Position

The City of Southfield Fire Internship program is a training that provides individuals an opportunity to obtain valuable training designed to give the Intern a well-rounded exposure to and appreciation of the functions performed by the Firefighters of the City of Southfield. The intern position is an educational role intended to provide students with practical, hands-on experience in the fire service under the direct supervision of professional personnel. Interns will gain exposure to daily fire department operations, emergency medical services, fire prevention, public education, and administrative functions. Interns must be familiar with and abide by all departmental rules and policies, City ordinances, and State and Federal laws.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check.
  • Must be a full-time student.
  • Must be enrolled in a Fire Academy and/or EMT/Paramedic program.
  • Must maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Must be able to perform all job-related physical abilities
  • Must successfully pass a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), Oakland Physical Agility Test (OPAT).

Nice To Haves

  • The Southfield Fire Internship Program is used as an applicant pool for hiring entry-level probationary Firefighters for the Southfield Fire Department.
  • Participation in the Fire Internship Program does not guarantee employment in a full-time Firefighter position with the City of Southfield.
  • Members of the Program will be considered “At-Will” members, participation will be at the sole discretion of the City of Southfield.
  • Applicants must maintain all minimum requirements and certifications while waiting for consideration for employment.
  • Names of the successful candidates will remain eligible for consideration for one year from placement on the eligibility list.
