This position involves a 20-week/868-hour curriculum of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) academy activities. These activities include classroom instruction, assignments, physical training, and non-sworn law enforcement tasks in areas such as traffic enforcement, narcotics investigation, crime scene processing, community affairs, law, investigations, crime prevention, and other specialties. The successful trainee will gain the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for an entry-level law enforcement position within state, county, municipal governments, or certain private agencies. Candidates must meet all essential job functions and qualifications of a Police Officer to be considered for the Police Cadet position. The North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission dictates the curriculum. General subjects cover criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcohol beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations. Successful completion requires passing all units, the POPAT (Police Officer Physical Abilities Test), and the state certification examination. Upon completion, students may earn up to 23 credit hours toward an A.A.S. degree in Criminal Justice Technology. Successful graduates are eligible for promotion to a sworn police officer role for the Town of Huntersville, contingent on additional field training. Failure to graduate within the prescribed training period may result in termination.
