About The Position

The Platform Engineer is an entry-level engineering role responsible for learning and supporting the platforms, tools, and technologies that enable GreatAmerica's business and technology operations. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, this role contributes to platform maintenance, monitoring, automation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities while building foundational technical, operational, and business knowledge.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 0-3 years of relevant experience

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to a major cloud platform (Azure/AWS/GCP)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and IT service management practices (Jira/ServiceNow)
  • Familiarity with source control tools (GitHub/Bitbucket/Azure DevOps) and basic Git workflows
  • Exposure to infrastructure-as-code concepts (Terraform)
  • Familiarity with JSON/YAML for configuration and templating
  • Exposure to containerization (Docker); familiarity with Kubernetes concepts (Pods, Deployments) a plus
  • Exposure to Linux fundamentals (command line, file systems, basic administration)
  • Exposure to basic scripting (Bash/Python) for everyday automation tasks
  • Basic programming or scripting ability (.NET/Java/JavaScript/TypeScript)
  • Exposure to networking fundamentals (DNS, HTTP/S, load balancing, basic firewall/security group concepts)
  • Basic awareness of how monitoring and alerting can surface failures originating outside the platform being monitored
  • Interest in financial services, banking, or regulated-industry technology

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the implementation, maintenance, and support of platform capabilities under guidance.
  • Support platform lifecycle activities including provisioning, configuration, upgrades, patching, and monitoring.
  • Assist with automation and continuous improvement initiatives to improve platform reliability, scalability, and efficiency.
  • Monitor platform health and follow established procedures to identify, troubleshoot, resolve, or escalate issues.
  • Support incident, problem, and change management processes.
  • Follow established security, compliance, and operational controls.
  • Document work activities, processes, configurations, and solutions using established standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technology teams, vendors, and business partners to support platform-related initiatives.
  • Build understanding of how platform services support business operations and technology outcomes.
  • Learn to identify and escalate issues originating from upstream systems, vendors, integrations, or dependencies.
