About The Position

Type One Energy Group, Inc. is seeking a summer intern to apply their education and experience to the design and development of plasma diagnostics for a new fusion energy device. The role is suited to a self-motivated learner who enjoys challenges and gaining new skills. A background in physics—particularly plasma physics and fusion energy—is relevant, though broader experience in physical laboratory work, mathematical or computational methods, engineering, and software is also important. The internship is based in Knoxville, Tennessee, pays $25–$35 per hour, and runs for 12 weeks in Summer 2027, starting May 24, 2027. It is a 40-hour-per-week internship reporting to the Senior Diagnostic Scientist. Type One Energy develops an optimized stellarator fusion energy system using advanced manufacturing, computational physics, and high-field superconducting magnets. Its FusionDirect program aims to pursue a low-risk, short-schedule path to a fusion power plant through a partner-intensive and capital-efficient strategy. The company is committed to community engagement in developing and deploying its clean energy technology. This position may involve access to information subject to U.S. export control laws. Any offer may be contingent on the Company's ability to comply with applicable requirements and obtain any necessary government authorizations. For U.S.-based positions, the Company participates in E-Verify, and new hires must complete employment eligibility verification. The Company is an equal opportunity employer and processes applicant information for recruitment and related lawful purposes.

  • Have experience with data analysis in Python.
  • Be able to receive guidance, work independently, and contribute to a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional software skills such as numerical simulations, optical system design, thermal modeling, electrical schematic or PCB design, SPICE circuit simulation, version control, Linux, and databases.
  • Experience with plasma physics, fusion energy, or remote sensing.
  • Hands-on experience with scientific instruments, microwave/RF systems, optics, lasers, vacuum systems, and/or electronic circuits.

Responsibilities

  • Apply physical models and numerical analysis tools to guide requirements for plasma diagnostics.
  • Collaborate with computational physicists, experimental physicists, and engineers to develop conceptual designs for plasma diagnostics.
  • Develop data-analysis workflows and algorithms to extract physical information from raw instrument data.
  • Build and test physical diagnostic hardware, including optical systems and electronic circuits.
