About The Position

The City of Danbury is hiring a Pipe Installer I to perform skilled work installing and maintaining the water distribution and sewer collection systems. The role involves physical labor and skilled operation of construction tools and equipment. Work is performed under limited supervision in all weather conditions and at varying hours. Employees may occasionally supervise or assign work to others and may work alone or with a crew. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of experience in public works activities, utility construction, industrial mechanics, or related work. Five or more years of stated experience may substitute for the high school diploma or GED. A Commercial Driver’s License Class A with Tanker Endorsement is preferred and must be obtained within one year of employment. The position works under the general supervision of the Chief of Water Distribution & Sewer Collection. Applicants are selected through application review and a practical examination. Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of experience in public works activities, utility construction, industrial mechanics, or related work; five or more years of stated experience may be considered in lieu of a high school diploma or GED.
Considerable knowledge of tools and methods used in road construction, pipe installation, and related work.
Ability to operate medium- to heavy-duty automotive equipment, machinery, and tools.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read and understand construction drawings.
Skill in using special hand tools and instruments.
Ability to recognize potential safety hazards and use appropriate safety instruments and equipment to mitigate hazards.
Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual labor under hazardous and adverse conditions.
Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

Assist with installation and maintenance of the water distribution and sewer collection systems.
Dig trenches, lay pipe, make joints, open and close water valves and manholes, and repair fire hydrants.
Operate automotive equipment, including light trucks, backhoes, dump trucks, forklifts, sewer trucks, and crane trucks.
Perform masonry work to construct connections and inverts.
Perform roadway repairs as required.
Occasionally handle complaints and assign work to others.
Operate pipe-locating equipment to trace line breaks and perform related work as required.
Respond to emergencies and communicate with the public as needed.
Inspect workmanship on water and sewer projects before City acceptance.
Operate sewer-cleaning and videotaping equipment.
