About The Position

McGill University is seeking Physics Teaching Assistants for the Fall 2026 term. This role involves supporting various undergraduate physics courses, including PHYS 101, PHYS 131, PHYS 180, PHYS 182, PHYS 224, PHYS 230, PHYS 253, PHYS 257, PHYS 260, PHYS 320, PHYS 328, PHYS 350, PHYS 357, PHYS 352, PHYS 396, PHYS 404, PHYS 434, PHYS 469, PHYS 512, PHYS 521, PHYS 551, PHYS 557, PHYS 558, and PHYS 610. The estimated number of positions is 111, with a total of 90 hours of work per term. The position starts on August 31, 2026, and ends on December 11, 2026. Requirements

  • Must be registered in a graduate program at McGill University.
  • Priority will be given to students enrolled in a graduate program in Physics.
  • Prior graduate/undergraduate study in the subject of the course.
  • Suitable teaching skills.
  • Must be registered in a graduate program at McGill University.
  • Priority will be given to students enrolled in a graduate program in physics at McGill University following the rules of the collective agreement.
  • Completion of coursework in electronics, or equivalent experience.
  • Ideally, the TA will have taken an atmospheric/climate physics course themselves, or have TA’ed for this course before. Alternatively, a graduate student with research involving planetary atmospheres would be ideal (stellar atmospheres would be a close second).
  • Ideally, the TA will have taken PHYS 434 at McGill.
  • Advanced knowledge of quantum theory at the level of Sakurai.
  • Knowledge of graduate level course on Quantum Field Theory.

  • Invigilation of one evening or in-class midterm
  • Answering students questions
  • Marking of midterm and final exam questions
  • Entering grades on mycourses
  • Holding tutorials and possibly office hours for consultation
  • Supervising laboratory sessions
  • Invigilating exams
  • Attending lectures
  • Assisting instructors in other aspects of the course development and delivery.
  • Holding regular problem solving sessions/office hours to help students with assignments
  • Participating in "grading parties" with instructor to grade midterm and final exams
  • Invigilating 1 to 2 midterm exams in the evening
  • Monitoring online forums/myCourses discussion boards.
  • Grading weekly homework assignments
  • Preparation for experiments
  • Supervision of students in assigned experiments
  • Grading of lab reports
  • Hold regular office hours to help students with assignments
  • Facilitate in-class problem-solving sessions
  • Grade assignments, quizzes, and exams
  • Preparation for lab experiments
  • Grading of lab reports and project
  • Grading of assignments/midterm
  • Supervision of students in the lab
  • Updating assignments as needed
  • Assistance with myCourses student discussions
  • Participate in "grading parties" with instructor to get midterm exams and final exam graded promptly
  • Monitor online forums/myCourses discussion boards.

  • Holding office hours
  • Deliver a guest lecture (optional/conditional)
  • Run help sessions before midterm and final exam
  • Help grade final exam
  • Facilitate lab sessions and grade lab reports
  • Hold regular tutorials and/or office hours to help students with assignments
  • Update lab materials as needed
  • Be present in some class sessions to assist students doing in-class exercises
  • Lead tutorial sessions to assist students with course material and homeworks
  • Moderate discussions in the online forums
  • Correcting assignments, mid-term and final examinations; answering student queries on the assignments;
  • Provide TA sessions weekly on the assignments
  • Provide replacement lecture(s) if the instructor is travelling;
