About The Position

Join the Department of Surgery at Unity Hospital as a part-time Surgical Hospitalist Physician Assistant in a highly autonomous role providing evening, overnight, and weekend coverage for surgical patients. The position involves direct care and clinical management of hospitalized surgical patients, evaluating in-house surgical consults, and performing bedside procedures. The PA works alongside attending surgeons while exercising independent clinical judgment and helping provide continuous, high-quality care during off-hours. The role offers an opportunity to develop acute care, surgical, and procedural skills within a supportive team environment with training. The position is based at Unity Hospital in Rochester, New York, and uses 12-hour overnight and weekend shifts.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science (BS) required.
Master of Science in Nursing (MS) required.
PA-C certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
Registered Physician Assistant (RPA) credential from the New York State Office of the Professions.

Responsibilities

Provide on-site coverage for surgical patients during assigned evening, overnight, and weekend shifts.
Assess and manage patients on the surgical service, escalating significant changes in condition to the attending surgeon as appropriate.
Respond to and evaluate in-house surgical consults.
Perform bedside procedures and treatments, including peripheral IV placement, NG tube insertion, bladder catheterization, wound and dressing care, suture and drain removal, arterial punctures, venipuncture, and other procedures within scope.
Assist with emergency care and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed.
Collaborate with attending surgeons and other members of the multidisciplinary care team.
Maintain timely, accurate clinical documentation.
