Physical Design Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple Inc. is hiring a Physical Design Engineer to work in Cupertino, California, and various unanticipated locations throughout the USA. The role works with the logic design team to understand partition architecture and address physical design considerations early in the design cycle. The engineer completes netlist-to-GDS2 implementation for partitions, meeting schedule and design goals, and drives timing, physical, and electrical verification through signoff closure. The role also resolves physical-design-related design and flow issues, identifies potential solutions, and drives their execution. The position is 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or foreign equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of and implementation experience with Innovus and Fusion Compiler APR tools.
  • Experience tuning flows and methodologies and improving design power, performance, and area.
  • Experience with static timing analysis and timing convergence techniques.
  • Knowledge of IR/IVD analysis and violation-fix techniques.
  • LVC/DRC debugging and fixing skills.
  • Physical design experience on technology nodes of 7 nm and beyond, and knowledge of modern CMOS technology and fabrication basics.
  • Experience with block-level design, including floorplanning, placement, clock tree synthesis, routing, and ECO steps.
  • Knowledge of power-reduction design techniques, including clock gating, power gating, and multi-voltage-domain design.
  • Scripting skills in Tcl, Perl, or Python, including automation.
  • Understanding of top-down and bottom-up design approaches and ability to handle inter-block design issues involving timing and PDV-related problems.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the logic design team to understand partition architecture and drive physical aspects early in the design cycle.
  • Complete netlist-to-GDS2 implementation for partitions while meeting schedule and design goals.
  • Perform timing, physical, and electrical verification and drive signoff closure for partitions.
  • Resolve physical-design-related design and flow issues, identify potential solutions, and drive execution.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to participate in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs, including discretionary restricted stock unit awards and the option to purchase Apple stock at a discount through the Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
