About The Position

The Phlebotomy Technician I performs skin punctures and venipunctures on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for clinical laboratory analysis. The position works under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor. Duties also include laboratory clerical work, specimen processing, supply management, and maintaining clean work and storage areas. Additional tasks may be assigned by the department manager or director.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained as current.

Nice To Haves

At least two years of clinical laboratory experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform skin punctures and venipunctures on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for laboratory analysis.
Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
Know the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
Communicate politely and professionally with patients and visitors, including using proper telephone etiquette.
Use proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment to collect specimens from newborns through geriatric patients.
Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
Prepare specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
Stock routine supplies and maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation according to established policies and procedures.
May pick up samples at the hospital or operating room; help sort samples for analysis and put samples away; assist pathology; manage inventory and replenish or order supplies; handle mail pickup and delivery, faxing, phone calls, and product deliveries.
Perform other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.
