The Phlebotomist is responsible for verifying positive patient identification, assessing patient reactions to specimen procurement, and performing venipuncture and collecting other specimens from patients of all age groups according to established protocols. This role also involves obtaining medical assistance when necessary, prioritizing specimen collection, ensuring completion of collection functions, and proper labeling and suitability of specimens for testing. The Phlebotomist will resolve specimen identification and/or requisition problems, perform limited testing under CLIA guidelines, answer and screen telephone calls, and assist with inventory and supply maintenance. Additionally, they will provide support for billing and other business functions, accept and sort specimens from various customers, package and track specimens for transport, and process specimens for testing, including aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and loading instruments. The role requires responding to specimen procurement requests, ordering and verifying test requests, documenting information for quality assurance, running quality control checks, and notifying providers of stat, critical, and abnormal results. Laboratory result entry, performing proficiency testing, and reviewing pending and management reports are also key duties. The Phlebotomist will also generate and distribute reports and instruct employees and students in phlebotomy, data entry, and specimen processing functions. A demonstrated ability to provide age-appropriate patient care is essential.
