About The Position

The Pharmacy Manager provides empathetic pharmacy consulting to patients on medication use and drug interactions, and offers preventive and clinical healthcare services such as immunizations, diagnostic testing, and patient outcome services. The role ensures prescribed medications are compounded, reviewed, dispensed, and verified accurately in accordance with regulatory requirements and company policies. The Pharmacy Manager manages pharmacy workflow, financial performance, inventory, patient experience, and pharmacy staff performance and engagement, while supporting staff development through training, coaching, and formal performance management.

The position oversees day-to-day pharmacy operations, including patient counseling, prescription dispensing, compliance, staffing and scheduling, pharmacy technology, insurance claims, documentation, facilities, and clinical services. It partners with the Store Manager and other colleagues on staff management, business opportunities, community outreach, and pharmacy performance. The manager also maintains required credentials and develops their pharmacy, healthcare, and management knowledge.

Requirements

• BS in Pharmacy or PharmD from an accredited educational institution.
• Current pharmacist licensure in the states within the district.
• Certified Immunizer or willingness to become an immunizer within 90 days of hire.
• At least 1 year of pharmacy experience, including prescription filling, recordkeeping, legal compliance, pharmacy operations, pharmacy software and technology systems, and insurance billing; more specific state requirements may take precedence.
• Experience performing prescription dispensing activities demonstrating a strong working knowledge of applicable state and federal controlled-substance laws.
• For internal candidates: an average rating of at least 3.0 on leadership behaviors on the last performance review, if one is on file, and no written disciplinary actions in the last 12 months.

• Supervisory experience planning, organizing, and directing the work of pharmacy staff.

Responsibilities

• Engage patients, resolve issues, answer questions, and model customer-service practices that promote a positive and inclusive patient experience.
• Anticipate patient needs and promote Walgreens healthcare services, including consultations, medication management, drug therapy reviews, immunizations, diagnostic testing, and patient outcome services.
• Participate in community events as requested by the Store Manager, Healthcare Supervisor, or District Manager.
• Counsel patients on medication use, side effects, interactions, contraindications, privacy, generic and lower-cost medicines, and over-the-counter products; refer patients to medical providers when appropriate.
• Perform pharmacist duties, including compounding, drug therapy reviews, verification, medication management, and accurate dispensing of prescriptions.
• Ensure pharmacy compliance with regulations, company policies, standards, and Good Faith Dispensing requirements, including applicable controlled-substance laws.
• Establish efficient pharmacy workflows; oversee staff scheduling, role assignments, coordination, and team suggestions; and manage pharmacy opening, closing, and shift changes.
• Collaborate with the Store Manager to define and develop strategic business opportunities.
• Maintain knowledge of pharmacy information technology systems and support staff and patients with those systems; identify productivity improvements.
• Ensure insurance claims are processed accurately, resolve payment rejections and patient issues, and work with insurers and medical providers, including through third-party audits.
• Follow up with medical providers to clarify prescriptions, dosages, refills, interactions, and allergies, and to discuss alternatives or answer questions.
• Perform clinical and wellness services, including immunizations, diagnostic testing, disease-state management, and other healthcare services.
• Partner with centralized support on patient registration and exception resolution; conduct virtual product reviews in virtual environments according to company procedures.
• Oversee pharmacy maintenance, housekeeping, repairs, equipment, and layout changes to maintain a functional and efficient department.
• Prepare and submit records, reports, and other documentation required to operate the pharmacy under state and federal laws.
• Collaborate with the Store Manager on hiring, discipline, and termination of pharmacy staff and ensure compliance with employment laws.
• Set staff expectations and goals, foster teamwork, recognize improvements, oversee training, conduct performance reviews, and support team members’ career progression.
• Address employee relations concerns, complaints, and conflicts, and support team member welfare and morale.
• Maintain required licenses, credentials, and certifications for clinical services; complete required education credits and company training.
• Maintain and enhance pharmacy and healthcare knowledge, pursue relevant best practices, monitor personal performance, seek feedback, and use the Healthcare Supervisor and Store Manager as mentors and coaches.
• Communicate relevant corporate health and wellness services and strategy information to pharmacy staff on behalf of the Store Manager.
• Analyze pharmacy financial, customer-service, and inventory performance data; manage asset protection and inventory; and identify performance trends and improvement opportunities.
• Develop relationships with local healthcare providers, promote the pharmacy in the community, and support the Store Manager in expanding community health and wellness awareness.
