About The Position

Auto-Owners Insurance is seeking a motivated underwriting trainee to perform and apply insurance coverage, rules, and guidelines in underwriting decisions consistent with the Company’s underwriting philosophy. The role includes training and development through completion of the Company’s underwriter training program for the assigned insurance line. After initial in-person training, the employee may be eligible for work-from-home time according to job responsibilities and the leadership team’s direction. The role involves learning insurance coverages, contracts, company philosophy, and procedures; interpreting insurance documents; analyzing risks; and communicating underwriting decisions to independent agents and colleagues.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or direct equivalent experience with property/casualty underwriting.
Ability to organize data, multitask, and make decisions independently.
Above-average written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to write reports and compose correspondence.
Ability to resolve complex issues.
Ability to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.

Responsibilities

Learn insurance coverages, contracts, company philosophy, and procedures to make underwriting decisions.
Read, interpret, and respond to policies, manuals, forms, and endorsements.
Gather information, develop opinions, and clearly communicate decisions using sound reasoning and judgment.
Analyze loss experience, financial conditions, and physical characteristics of risks.
Develop working knowledge of supporting sections of the underwriting department.
Communicate effectively with independent agents and other associates verbally and in writing.
Participate in and successfully complete the Company underwriter training program.
Continually develop product knowledge through approved educational programs.
