About The Position
The Person In Charge (PIC) is a primary contact for Safeway customers and provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service. In the absence of the Store Manager and First and Second Assistant Managers, the PIC is in charge of the store and has analogous authority to make decisions needed to operate it effectively, efficiently, profitably, and with superior customer service. When in charge—generally at night—the PIC supervises store employees. The role also performs Cashier-Checker duties and may require working in multiple store departments. The PIC handles store operations and customer and employee matters, monitors sales-floor service and product replenishment, supports checkout operations, and helps maintain a clean and safe store. The specific duties and skills may vary by store. The position is based entirely inside the store; outside work is rare.
Requirements
- Ability to follow company customer-service procedures.
- Demonstrated prior customer-service skills or related experience.
- Ability to interact with customers and coworkers.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Knowledge of store positions.
- Ability to work independently.

Responsibilities
- Provide customer service in accordance with employer procedures and company policy.
- Handle emergencies, customer complaints, and employee or customer accidents, and supervise store personnel when acting as the person in charge.
- Maintain familiarity with company policies and procedures.
- Supervise the sales floor to monitor customer service and product replenishment.
- Replace stock in displays near the checkout area.
- Help maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Assist cashiers with computer, register, and scanner problems.
- Perform basic office functions to assist customers and personnel.
- Operate an electronically scanning cash register, total customer bills, receive payments, and count back correct change.
- Bag groceries and lift bags into carts; offer carry-out assistance and provide it if a Courtesy Clerk is unavailable.
- May complete end-of-day office functions, count out-of-stock products, and count tills when other cashier-checkers leave.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
