Peer Computer Information Systems Tutor, Learning Support Systems, 2025
About The Position
Peer Tutors are current MCC students who work with other students to help them to develop effective learning strategies and to become self-regulated learners. These tutors help students with discipline-specific content. The role involves fostering the development of independent, intentional learners, helping students understand and use effective learning strategies, and providing tutor assistance in subject areas in one-on-one and group settings, specifically in Computer Information Systems. Tutors will develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty, attend training activities, adhere to tutoring center protocol, promote critical thinking and problem-solving, and help identify and fill learning gaps with discipline-specific content. Collaboration with the Director of Learning Support Systems on providing workshops is also a key aspect of the role. Secondary functions may include visiting classrooms to introduce tutoring services and assisting with other learning assistance projects.
Requirements
- Current MCC Student
- At least one faculty reference from MCC Computer Information Systems Department faculty, which must be obtained by way of faculty completion of the "Faculty Reference Form."
- MCC Course transcripts with As and Bs in the courses for which they wish to tutor
- Technology savvy
Responsibilities
- Foster the development of independent, intentional learners
- Help students understand and use effective learning strategies
- Provide tutor assistance in subject areas in one-on-one and group settings
- Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty
- Attend training activities to comply with certification requirements before and/or during semesters
- Adhere to tutoring center protocol and tutoring expectations as outlined in the Tutor Handbook
- Promote critical thinking and problem solving
- Help to identify and fill learning gaps with discipline specific content
- Collaborate with the Director of Learning Support Systems on providing workshops to fill learning gaps of both tutors and students with discipline specific content
- Visit classrooms, as needed, to introduce students to tutoring services
- Assisting with other learning assistance projects as assigned
