About The Position

The PBX Operator answers and directs incoming calls and assists with outgoing and internal calls and overhead paging. The role monitors alarm panels, performs alarm testing, announces emergency codes, and maintains updated internal phone, extension, and pager lists. The operator also relays calls through the telephone switchboard, maintains patient call-routing information, and helps keep the communications center operating during fires or disasters.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Understanding of basic medical terminology.
• Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
• Ability to multitask.

Nice To Haves

• One year of previous PBX experience.
• Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families.
• Previous experience working in a hospital.

Responsibilities

• Operate the telephone switchboard to relay incoming, outgoing, and inter-office calls accurately, promptly, and professionally.
• Maintain an alphabetical file of patients’ names, room numbers, and telephone extensions to expedite call routing.
• Page authorized personnel over the intercom system and announce the close of visiting hours and other notifications.
• Record pertinent information about the hospital telephone network and notify the telephone carrier and supervisor of issues or malfunctions.
• Monitor alarm panels, perform alarm testing, and page emergency codes according to established procedures.
• Follow the Fire and Safety Manual and Disaster Plan, and maintain communications in the event of a fire or disaster.
• Use appropriate independent judgment and decision-making.
• Provide excellent customer service and keep the work area clean, organized, and free of clutter.
• Maintain and update internal phone, extension, and pager lists.
