About The Position

The Patient Transporter supports Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values and complies with its Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory and accreditation standards. The role transports patients as assigned, ensuring patient identity, safety, comfort, and appropriate infection-control practices. The position’s hours may be scheduled any time between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m., and every other weekend is required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• BLS certification through the American Heart Association, or obtain it within 90 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

• At least one year of experience with patient transport handling.

Responsibilities

• Transport patients as assigned.
• Verify patient identity using two patient identifiers.
• Provide and adjust transport equipment for patient safety and comfort, including appropriate line and side-rail positioning.
• Disinfect transport equipment with an approved cleaning product between transports.
• Assist patients onto transport equipment; request assistance from patient care staff if patients need additional help.
• Maintain transport equipment through routine cleaning and linen dressing, and report maintenance needs.
• Notify nursing or ancillary personnel when patients arrive or depart.
• Attend to patient-related documents, such as the ticket to ride.
• Immediately report unusual patient symptoms during transport, such as fainting or shortness of breath.
• Provide, move, and care for equipment used to transport patients.
• Use appropriate infection-control precautions, including hand hygiene, proper PPE, and isolation precautions.
• Safely transport patient oxygen after it has been set up by a clinician.
• Provide management with feedback about equipment condition and availability.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
