About The Position

Geisinger is piloting a new model of care on its Advanced Acute Care Units at the Danville campus, known as the ACE Nursing Model of Care. This model will utilize Patient Care Technicians to perform duties that do not require a nursing license, allowing licensed nurses to focus on advanced skills. This provides Patient Care Technicians with more opportunities for career advancement, autonomy, and greater involvement in patient care delivery. The role involves performing a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, maintaining the patient care and unit environment according to established policies and procedures. The position requires meeting qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range of their assigned clinical area.

Responsibilities

Facilitate ADLs: hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals
Take vital signs
Perform Point of Care testing
Turn and reposition patients
Record daily weights
Perform equipment checks and exchanges
Assist with dressing care
Remove Foley Catheter and Peripheral IV
Perform nasogastric tube removal and nasal swabs
Check code carts and oxygen storage cabinets
Provide enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse, which may include advanced dressing care, suctioning, removal of Foley Catheter and peripheral IV.
Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
Perform daily, hands-on aspects of the storage, preparation and delivery of breast milk, infant and pediatric formulas.
Document in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record.
Identify, observe, and document the physical needs of the patient according to established standards. Report any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner.
Obtain and maintain the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, according to physician order.
Provide for or assist patients with activities of daily living and fulfill designated and delegated responsibilities for ongoing continuum of care. Includes patient hygiene and changing linens.
Provide one to one patient safety watch as assigned following established policies and procedures.
Accurately process specimens and provide timely transport of the specimen to the laboratory.
Perform point of care patient testing and point of care instrument maintenance and quality control.
Assist in problem solving, trouble shooting and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students in a positive manner.
Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths according to standards and facilitate patient throughput activities. Transcribe and process orders according to unit standard.
Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments.
Coordinate transportation of patients to multiple tests.
Participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information as pertinent to the nursing unit. Schedule tests, fax consults, etc.
Assist in ordering supplies: stationery items as well as floor stock, patient needs, individual nursing supplies.
Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
Operate, problem solve, and take corrective measures for clerical equipment. This includes scheduling maintenance of computers, fax machines, phones, etc.
Transport non-controlled medications as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic or unit.
Assist with transporting non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed.
Assist with transporting blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed.
Perform discharge follow up phone calls / coordinate virtual discharge appointment team.
Support / Assist staff with 5 min Drills and/or Quality Rounds - participate in regulatory readiness as needed.
