Patient Care Technician (BP7 Advanced Acute Care) - No CNA Cert Required - Day Shift
About The Position
Geisinger is piloting a new model of care on its Advanced Acute Care Units at its Danville, Bloomsburg, and Shamokin campuses. The ACE Nursing Model of Care utilizes more Patient Care Technician staff to take responsibility for and perform duties that do not require a nursing license. This new model of care will allow Patient Care Technicians more opportunity for career advancement, autonomy in their role, and greater involvement in the delivery of patient care. The Patient Care Technician will perform a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and maintain the patient care and unit environment consistent with the policies, procedures, and practices. They will meet the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area. This role provides enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse, which may include dressing care, removal of Foley Catheter and peripheral IV. The role also involves documenting in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record, identifying, observing, and documenting the physical needs of the patient according to established standards, and reporting any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner. The Patient Care Technician will obtain and maintain the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, according to physician order, and provide for or assist patients with activities of daily living and fulfill designated and delegated responsibilities for ongoing continuum of care, including patient hygiene and changing linens. They will provide one to one patient safety watch as assigned following established policies and procedures, accurately process specimens and provide timely transport of the specimen to the laboratory, and perform point of care patient testing and point of care instrument maintenance and quality control. The role also involves assisting in problem solving, trouble shooting and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies, serving as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students in a positive manner, and performing clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths according to standards and facilitating patient throughput activities. Transcribing and processing orders according to unit standard, releasing and confirming ordered tests to appropriate departments, and coordinating transportation of patients to multiple tests are also key responsibilities. The Patient Care Technician will participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information as pertinent to the nursing unit, schedule tests, fax consults, etc., and assist in ordering supplies, stationery items, floor stock, patient needs, and individual nursing supplies. Communication with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets and operating, problem-solving, and taking corrective measures for clerical equipment, including scheduling maintenance of computers, fax machines, phones, etc., are also part of the role. Staff have access to non-controlled medications storage and supply areas and can transport non-controlled medications as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic or unit. Assisting with transporting non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed, assisting with transporting blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed, and performing discharge follow up phone calls / coordinating virtual discharge appointment teams are also included. Support/assist staff with 5 min Drills and/or Quality Rounds - participate in regulatory readiness as needed. Work is typically performed in a clinical environment. Accountable for satisfying all job specific obligations and complying with all organization policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
