About The Position

Geisinger is seeking a highly motivated Patient Care Technician for their Advanced Acute Care Medical unit at Geisinger Medical Center. This role operates on a night shift schedule and is part of the new ACE (Achieving Collaborative Excellence) Nursing Model of Care, which empowers Patient Care Technicians with more autonomy and involvement in patient care. The position offers comprehensive on-the-job training, with no prior experience required. Geisinger also provides significant financial support for those looking to become nurses.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Basic Life Support Certification within 6 months
  • Ability to meet orientation and long-term full-time scheduling requirements.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and strong attendance.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to work three 12-hour Night shifts (7:00pm - 7:30am) including every other weekend and holiday.
  • Willingness to undergo a two-week classroom orientation (Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm) at the start of employment.

  • Experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited RN or LPN program.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) including hygiene, toileting, mobility, and meals.
  • Collect vital signs and daily weights.
  • Conduct Point of Care testing.
  • Turn and reposition patients.
  • Perform equipment checks and exchanges.
  • Provide dressing care.
  • Remove Foley Catheters and Peripheral IVs.
  • Perform nasogastric tube removal and nasal swabs.
  • Check code carts and oxygen storage cabinets.
  • Provide enhanced patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse.
  • Document patient care in the medical record.
  • Identify, observe, and document the physical needs of the patient.
  • Report any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel.
  • Obtain and maintain the integrity of specimens.
  • Provide for or assist patients with activities of daily living, including patient hygiene and changing linens.
  • Provide one to one patient safety watch as assigned.
  • Accurately process and transport specimens to the laboratory.
  • Perform point of care patient testing and quality control.
  • Assist in problem-solving and corrective measures for equipment and supplies.
  • Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students.
  • Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths.
  • Transcribe and process orders.
  • Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments.
  • Coordinate transportation of patients to multiple tests.
  • Participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information.
  • Schedule tests and faxes consults.
  • Assist in ordering supplies.
  • Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
  • Operate, problem-solve, and maintain clerical equipment.
  • Transport non-controlled medications and blood products as needed.
  • Perform discharge follow-up phone calls and coordinate virtual discharge appointments.
  • Support staff with 5-minute drills and participate in regulatory readiness.
  • Maintain the patient care and unit environment consistent with policies and procedures.
  • Meet qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area.
