About The Position

Geisinger is piloting a new model of care, the ACE Nursing Model of Care, on its Advanced Acute Care Units at the Danville campus. This model utilizes Patient Care Technicians to perform duties that do not require a nursing license, allowing licensed nurses to focus on advanced skills. This provides Patient Care Technicians with more opportunities for career advancement, autonomy, and greater involvement in patient care delivery. The role involves facilitating activities of daily living, taking vital signs, performing point-of-care testing, and other patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The position is for a GP4 Advanced Acute Care Palliative/Medical Surgical role, typically working three 12-hour Day shifts (7:00 am - 7:30 pm) including every other weekend and holiday. A two-week classroom orientation is required at the start of employment.

Requirements

High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
Basic Life Support Certification within 6 months
No experience needed.
Comprehensive on the job training provided.

Responsibilities

Facilitate activities of daily living (hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals).
Take vital signs.
Perform Point of Care testing.
Turn and reposition patients.
Perform daily weights.
Check and exchange equipment.
Provide dressing care.
Remove Foley Catheters and Peripheral IVs.
Remove nasogastric tubes and perform nasal swabs.
Check code carts and oxygen storage cabinets.
Provide enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse, which may include advanced dressing care and suctioning.
Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens.
Perform daily, hands-on aspects of the storage, preparation and delivery of breast milk, infant and pediatric formulas.
Document in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record.
Identify, observe, and document the physical needs of the patient according to established standards.
Report any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner.
Obtain and maintain the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, according to physician order.
Provide for or assist patients with activities of daily living and fulfill designated and delegated responsibilities for ongoing continuum of care, including patient hygiene and changing linens.
Provide one to one patient safety watch as assigned following established policies and procedures.
Accurately process specimens and provide timely transport of the specimen to the laboratory.
Perform point of care patient testing and point of care instrument maintenance and quality control.
Assist in problem solving, trouble shooting and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students in a positive manner.
Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths according to standards and facilitate patient throughput activities.
Transcribe and process orders according to unit standard.
Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments.
Coordinate transportation of patients to multiple tests.
Participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information as pertinent to the nursing unit.
Schedule tests, fax consults, etc.
Assist in ordering supplies (stationery items, floor stock, patient needs, individual nursing supplies).
Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
Operate, problem solve, and take corrective measures for clerical equipment, including scheduling maintenance of computers, fax machines, phones, etc.
Transport non-controlled medications as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic or unit.
Assist with transporting non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed.
Assist with transporting blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed.
Perform discharge follow-up phone calls / coordinate virtual discharge appointment team.
Support/assist staff with 5-minute drills and/or Quality Rounds - participate in regulatory readiness as needed.
