Geisinger is piloting a new model of care on its Advanced Acute Care Units at the Danville campus, known as the ACE Nursing Model of Care. This model will utilize Patient Care Technicians to perform duties that do not require a nursing license, allowing licensed nurses to focus on advanced skills. This approach offers Patient Care Technicians greater opportunities for career advancement, autonomy, and involvement in patient care delivery. The role involves performing a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, maintaining the patient care and unit environment according to policies and procedures, and meeting the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range of their assigned clinical area. This position provides enhanced patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse, which may include advanced dressing care, suctioning, removal of Foley Catheter and peripheral IV. The role also involves performing venipunctures and skin punctures for blood specimens, handling breast milk and infant/pediatric formulas, documenting patient information, observing and reporting changes in patient condition, obtaining and maintaining specimen integrity, assisting patients with activities of daily living, providing patient safety watch, processing and transporting specimens, performing point of care patient testing, assisting with equipment and supply maintenance, serving as a preceptor/mentor, performing clerical duties, ordering supplies, communicating with food services, operating and troubleshooting clerical equipment, transporting non-controlled medications and blood products, making discharge follow-up calls, and participating in regulatory readiness activities.
