About The Position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works in Medical-Surgical Oncology and reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values. The role follows the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, along with applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. Under RN supervision, the PCT performs basic patient care and supports unit workflow in coordination with nursing staff.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or nursing student who has completed one semester of clinical experience.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).

Nice To Haves

• Phlebotomy experience.
• Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program or graduate of a phlebotomy course.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, measuring blood glucose, and recording intake and output.
• Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
• Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, or emotional conditions to nursing staff.
• Help keep patient rooms clean and orderly.
• Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and the ability to multitask and function under stressful situations.
• Use critical thinking to prioritize and complete unit work promptly as the needs of the unit, patients, and staff change.
• Serve as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments.
• Answer telephone, intercom, and call lights politely, use appropriate telephone etiquette, and communicate information to appropriate staff, family members, or patients.
• Coordinate overall unit workflow with the charge RN and/or assistant manager as needed.
• Perform pre-census activities and validate daily admission, discharge, and census lists as needed.
