The Patient Care Technician provides indirect and direct care under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. This includes meeting patients’ dependency needs related to nutrition, hygiene, safety, and physical and psychological comfort, as well as supporting patients and their significant others. The position carries out duties in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision, and values and involves extensive interaction with patients, staff, physicians, family members, and visitors. Work is primarily performed in patient settings and involves lifting, bending, stooping, and exposure to blood-borne pathogens. The position is classified as Level 1 under OSHA’s definition of occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens. The ED Hold Unit is a specialized inpatient nursing department located within the Emergency Department. Its dedicated inpatient nursing team cares for admitted Medical-Surgical and Cardiac patients under inpatient or observation status, beginning care in coordination with the ED nursing team. Inpatient-status patients transfer to inpatient units as beds become available; observation-status patients remain in the ED Hold Unit for their stay. Department priorities include rapidly assuming care after admission orders are placed to alleviate ED congestion; delivering safe, high-quality inpatient-level care in non-traditional ED spaces; and supporting efficient care progression through purposeful planning that reduces length of stay and enables timely transitions.
