The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and represents BJC through compassionate, professional, patient-focused service. The role facilitates patients’ entry into BJC facilities and requires emotional intelligence, attention to detail, and knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements. Accurate demographic and insurance information, benefit verification, point-of-service collections, and selection of the correct Master Patient Index (MPI) record support patient safety, reimbursement, and prevention of denials. The position performs hospital registration and scheduling in multiple BJC systems. It confirms patient identity, registers and schedules patients, verifies insurance, scans and retrieves documents, validates that orders are complete and signed by the ordering provider, and confirms the correct test is ordered. The representative also provides procedure preparation instructions, explains financial responsibilities, and collects applicable patient payments. The role requires understanding and applying Medicare Secondary Payer rules, HIPAA privacy standards, the Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements. Each patient completes a HIPAA acknowledgement. BJC identifies this as a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices.
