The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and represents BJC through compassionate, professional customer service consistent with its mission, vision, values, and service standards. The role facilitates patients’ entry into BJC facilities and requires emotional intelligence, professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to connect with patients whose medical needs and acuity vary. Accurate collection of demographic and insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collection help maximize reimbursement and prevent denials. Correct selection of patients from the Master Patient Index (MPI) is critical to patient safety. The position performs hospital registration and scheduling across multiple BJC systems, verifies insurance, scans and retrieves documents, and validates that orders are complete, signed by the ordering provider, and for the correct test. The representative gives patients preparation instructions for scheduled procedures, explains financial responsibilities, and collects applicable payments. The role also requires understanding and enforcing applicable requirements, including Medicare Secondary Payer guidelines, HIPAA Privacy Standards, Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements. Each patient completes a HIPAA acknowledgement. BJC identifies this as a safety-sensitive position; maintaining alertness and working safely are essential functions. This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM–5:30 PM. Training lasts four weeks and runs 8:00 AM–4:30 PM.
