The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and represents BJC through compassionate, professional, patient-focused service. The role facilitates patients’ entry into BJC facilities and requires emotional intelligence, attention to detail, and the ability to make personal connections with patients whose medical needs and acuity vary. Accurate collection of demographic and insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collections help maximize reimbursement and prevent denials. Correctly selecting the patient from the Master Patient Index (MPI) is critical to patient safety and record integrity. This position is based in Outpatient Registration at Missouri Baptist Sullivan, with cross-training in the Emergency Department. It includes hospital registration and scheduling in multiple BJC systems; patient identification; insurance verification; document scanning and retrieval; and confirming that orders are complete, signed by the ordering provider, and specify the correct test. The representative provides preparation instructions for scheduled procedures, explains financial responsibilities, and collects applicable patient payments. The position requires understanding and applying regulatory requirements, including Medicare Secondary Payer rules, HIPAA Privacy Standards, the Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements. Each patient completes a HIPAA acknowledgement. BJC identifies this as a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices. The role is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with weekend on-call duties and a holiday rotation.
