The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and must provide compassionate, professional service consistent with BJC’s mission, vision, values, and service standards. The role facilitates patients’ entry into BJC facilities and requires emotional intelligence, professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to connect with patients whose medical needs and acuity vary. Accurate demographic and insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collections help maximize reimbursement and prevent denials. Correctly selecting patients from the Master Patient Index (MPI) is essential to patient safety. The representative maintains knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and applicable federal, state, and accreditation requirements. This position performs hospital registration and scheduling across multiple BJC systems. It includes confirming patient identity, registering and scheduling patients, verifying insurance, scanning and retrieving documents, validating orders, explaining procedure preparation instructions, educating patients about financial responsibilities, and collecting applicable payments. The representative must understand and follow regulatory requirements, including Medicare Secondary Payer rules, HIPAA Privacy Standards, the Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements. Each patient completes a HIPAA acknowledgement. BJC identifies this as a safety-sensitive position. Employees must remain alert and work safely. The position is located in an office in Farmington, with hours listed as 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; no weekends or holidays are required.
