The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and represents BJC through compassionate, professional, patient-focused service. The role facilitates patients’ entry into BJC facilities, supporting accurate registration and scheduling, insurance verification, benefit checks, and point-of-service collections. Accurate collection of demographic and insurance information and selection of the correct patient from the Master Patient Index (MPI) help protect patient safety, maximize reimbursement, and prevent denials. The position involves hospital registration and scheduling across multiple BJC systems, including confirming patient identity, scanning and retrieving documents, and validating that orders are complete, signed by the ordering provider, and for the correct test. The representative provides procedure preparation instructions and explains financial responsibilities and applicable payments. The role also requires understanding and enforcing regulatory requirements, including Medicare Secondary Payer rules, HIPAA Privacy Standards, the Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements. Each patient completes a HIPAA acknowledgement. This is a part-time role at North West, with a stated shift of 2:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Employees must work two holidays per year. Training lasts two weeks, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A shift differential is noted. BJC identifies this as a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices.
