The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and represents BJC through compassionate, professional customer service consistent with its mission, vision, values, and service standards. The role facilitates patients’ entry into BJC facilities and requires emotional intelligence, professionalism, personal connection, and attention to detail. It supports reimbursement and helps prevent denials through accurate collection of demographic and insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collection. Correctly selecting patients from the Master Patient Index (MPI) is essential to patient safety and record integrity. The position is part time in the emergency department, working 12-hour shifts on Saturdays and Sundays from 6:45 AM to 7:15 PM. Responsibilities include hospital registration and scheduling across BJC systems; patient identification; insurance verification; scanning and retrieving documents; and validating that orders are complete, signed by the ordering provider, and for the correct test. The representative provides procedure-preparation instructions, explains financial responsibilities, and collects applicable patient payments. The role also requires understanding and enforcing applicable regulatory and hospital requirements, including Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA, the Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements. Each patient completes a HIPAA acknowledgement. BJC identifies this as a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices.
