About The Position

The Pathology Assistant prepares tissue specimens for processing, cuts and stains tissue, and mounts specimens using appropriate reagents and instruments to ensure slides are ready for pathologist review. The role also oversees pathology office procedures, distributes reports promptly, processes pathology billing, and prepares, tracks, and processes pathology sendout requests. This is a per diem, day-shift position in the Pathology Lab, reporting to the Director of Laboratory Services.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• One year of experience in a hospital histology laboratory.

Nice To Haves

• American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification as a Histology Technician is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare tissue for processing.
• Cut sections to specifications and accurately dictate macroscopic observations for transcription.
• Stain tissue using routine stains.
• Order, prepare, and replenish materials, supplies, and reagents.
• File operative reports in patient records in a timely manner.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and quality control.
• Participate in training new employees.
• Discard pathology specimens appropriately.
• Prepare and ship samples requiring further testing in a timely manner.
• Maintain accurate sendout logs and paperwork.
• Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the tissue lab.
• Oversee pathology office procedures, distribute reports in a timely manner, and accurately process pathology billing.
• Prepare, track, and process pathology sendout requests.
