About The Position

The Pathology Lab Assistant performs technical and clerical activities related to processing tissue and body fluids, supporting the preparation of accurate samples for examination and diagnosis by a pathologist. The role conducts examinations of surgical specimens under a pathologist’s direct supervision and responsibility, handling specimens carefully throughout the diagnostic process.

Success in this role requires technical competency, meticulous attention to detail, organized workflows, and adherence to laboratory standards. The position also supports timely specimen accessioning and processing, intraoperative consultations, quality monitoring, and surgical pathology operations.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Six months of clinical laboratory experience.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Excellent time management skills.

Nice To Haves

• Associate's degree in biological or chemical science.

Responsibilities

• Conduct gross examination and dissection of surgical and autopsy specimens under the direct or indirect supervision of a pathologist.
• Document findings accurately, including tumor mapping and comprehensive gross reporting.
• Review relevant clinical information, history, imaging, and operative records, and coordinate with surgeons and clinicians to evaluate case details.
• Coordinate with histology technicians and laboratory staff to support prompt specimen accessioning, labeling, and processing in line with turnaround-time goals.
• Perform frozen section processing, assist with intraoperative consultations, and obtain samples for research or other ancillary studies according to department standards.
• Ensure proper specimen handling and fixation, and maintain CPT coding accuracy.
• Help maintain surgical specimen archives in accordance with CAP and OSHA standards.
• Provide instruction on specimen handling and processing.
• Monitor quality, identify error trends, and provide feedback to improve surgical pathology operations.
