About The Position

The Pathology Assistant works in the Pathology Lab and reports to the Director of Laboratory Services. The role involves slicing, staining, and mounting tissue specimens using various reagents and instruments to prepare slides for review by a pathologist. The assistant also oversees pathology office procedures, distributes reports promptly, processes pathology billing, and prepares, tracks, and processes pathology sendout requests.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• One year of experience in a hospital histology laboratory.

Nice To Haves

• American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification as a Histology Technician is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare tissue for processing.
• Cut sections to specifications and accurately dictate macroscopic observations for transcription.
• Stain tissue using routine stains.
• Order, prepare, and replenish materials, supplies, and reagents.
• File operative reports in patient records in a timely manner.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and quality control.
• Participate in training new employees.
• Discard pathology specimens appropriately.
• Prepare and ship samples requiring further testing in a timely manner.
• Accurately maintain sendout logs and paperwork.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the tissue lab.
• Distribute pathology reports in a timely fashion.
• Accurately process pathology billing.
• Prepare, track, and process pathology sendout requests.
