About The Position

This part-time faculty position is for an English Instructor within the Umoja program at Cuyamaca College, starting Fall 2026. Under administrative leadership, part-time faculty are responsible for tasks supporting the colleges' and District's visions, missions, and values, including classroom assignments, student evaluation, curriculum development, student advising, professional development, and assignment-specific needs. Cuyamaca College, a Hispanic-Serving Institution located in San Diego County, is committed to equity, excellence, and social justice through education. The Umoja program is a nationally recognized learning community that centers Black and African American students’ cultural knowledge and experiences through integrated writing and counseling to support success, transfer, and leadership development. It is open to all students interested in the Black and African Diaspora. The college seeks an equity-minded educator deeply committed to culturally responsive, relationship-centered teaching, coordinating, and mentorship within this program.

Requirements

  • Master's in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR Bachelor's in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition AND Master's in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism OR The equivalent.
  • If applying under an Equivalency, MUST submit additional Equivalency Determination Form and include Equivalency Materials.
  • Deeply committed to culturally responsive, relationship-centered teaching, coordinating, and mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks which support advancement of the visions, missions, and values of the colleges and District.
  • Manage classroom assignment.
  • Evaluate students.
  • Develop curriculum.
  • Advise students.
  • Engage in professional development.
  • Address any assignment-specific needs.
  • Teach sheltered English composition sections (C1000 in fall and C1001 in spring) within the Umoja cohort model.
  • Design culturally responsive curriculum grounded in experiences, histories, and topics related to the Black and African Diaspora.
  • Co-coordinate the Umoja program in collaboration with counseling faculty through recruitment, events, mentorship, and collaboration with counseling faculty.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the College, including IDEAA principles and equitable access, retention, and success for diverse student populations.
