About The Position

The Upward Bound Program, a federally funded initiative sponsored by the Department of Education, is designed to identify and support high school students who demonstrate the potential for success in post-secondary education. The program encourages qualified individuals to complete high school and enroll in the college or university of their choice. It provides individual and group counseling, academic advisement, and technical assistance for students in grades 9–12 in areas such as career exploration, educational planning, college entrance examination preparation, college admissions and financial aid procedures, tutoring, cultural and motivational development, and guidance on secondary school re-entry and other educational opportunities. This is a part-time position for the Summer Component, running from June 8, 2026, through July 9, 2026. The selected teacher must commit to teaching four (4) hours daily at Bronx Community College, with occasional virtual instruction as needed.

Requirements

  • Must hold New York State Department of Education certification in English
  • Must have several years of experience working with high school students
  • Must possess knowledge of TRIO Programs
  • Must provide two (2) signed letters of recommendation on official business letterhead

Responsibilities

  • Submit a syllabus for classroom instruction for approval prior to the start of the program
  • Teach all levels of English, including Literature and Composition
  • Prepare and administer pre- and post-assessments
  • Evaluate students’ academic needs
  • Produce progress reports/transcripts for each student at the conclusion of the academic year
  • Report any student concerns or academic needs to the Curriculum Coordinator/Associate Director
  • Perform other duties as assigned
