About The Position

The City of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a part-time Services Worker to support athletic-field maintenance and recreation activities. The position assists Park Services Supervisors and supports the maintenance, use, and care of Division facilities, properties, and shared-use sites. Work is scheduled three days per week, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or as scheduled by the supervisor. Salary is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Paid Time Off benefits are offered. The worker performs day-to-day general park maintenance and recreation support, with an emphasis on athletic-field maintenance, mowing, marking, and related tasks. A well-rounded and experienced turf professional is preferred. Duties also include equipment operation, irrigation management, basic building and park maintenance, facility inspections, customer communication, and assistance with rentals and facility use. Work is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions and remote settings. The role involves frequent walking, bending, lifting, digging, hauling, and machinery operation, with potential exposure to uneven terrain, insects, wildlife, dust, and noise. Personal protective equipment is used regularly. A high school diploma or GED and a valid Virginia driver’s license with an acceptable driving record are required. CPR/General First-Aid Certification is required within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

Perform day-to-day general park maintenance and recreation support, particularly athletic-field maintenance, mowing, and field marking.
Operate motorized and handheld equipment, including field-marking machines, groomers, tampers, light trucks, and mowers.
Operate heavy equipment, including tractors, loaders, and skid steers, for field and park maintenance, special projects, and snow removal at assigned properties.
Maintain athletic fields, including chemical application and sport-specific field maintenance.
Inspect, repair, and maintain existing irrigation systems.
Perform simple building and park maintenance, such as carpentry, plumbing, landscaping, and electrical tasks, as needed.
Inspect facilities with City agencies to help ensure compliance with applicable safety and maintenance standards.
Communicate effectively and courteously with customers, peers, and others.
Monitor and assist with rentals and use of Parks and Recreation-managed or shared parks and facilities.
Maintain accurate work logs, report hazards, and follow safety policies and environmental regulations.
Perform other related duties as assigned, including special assignments during unusual situations or a declared State of Emergency.
