About The Position

Spokane Public Schools is seeking a Paraeducator for the Special Design Program at Salk Middle School. This role is crucial in creating a loving and collaborative learning community where all students belong and thrive. The ideal candidate will embrace differences, have a desire to work with a diverse community of learners, possess a heart for the students they serve, work effectively as a team, be open to growth through feedback, and be a lifelong learner and positive problem solver. This position involves supporting students with severe and profound intellectual and physical disabilities, requiring agility, the ability to perform physical tasks such as kneeling, transferring, and lifting students, and providing personal care including toileting and feeding (with training). The Paraeducator will follow multiple service care plans, implement instructional and sensory plans, support communication needs, maintain documentation, and collect student data. This is a continuing role with 7 hours per day, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  • Must provide high school diploma (or equivalent) AND 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited college, AA or BA degree, OR pass an academically rigorous assessment.
  • Must complete Core Competencies within one year if hired into a Paraeducator position (refer to the ESS Collective Bargaining Agreement).
  • Demonstrated interest in working with students with a broad range of disabilities.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to aggressive and physical behaviors.
  • Have successfully completed or be willing to complete the District de-escalation/soft restraint training.
  • Must demonstrate initial competency level as measured by instructor observation.
  • Willing and physically capable of kneeling, bending, and working or sitting on the floor with students; running after students, based on student needs.
  • Provide personal care assistance to students including, but not limited to, feeding, tube feeding (with training), toileting and diapering, based on student needs.
  • Must pass the District strength and agility screening test, when necessary and based on student needs.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Heavier lifting will utilize a two-person lift or assistive devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a positive, professional, and confidential manner.
  • Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions, carry out routines, and implement interventions as directed by certificated staff or supervisors.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Proficiency in basic communication skills and ability to see, hear, and listen to the teacher and students throughout the classroom or school settings in order to supervise and maintain a safe environment for a diverse group of students.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.
  • Understanding of severe and profound intellectual and physical disabilities.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of successful work experience, training, or school district experience with students or adults with disabilities preferred.
  • Willing to complete the District de-escalation/soft restraint training.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional assistance in core academic areas designed by the teachers/specialists.
  • Assist the special education teacher/general education teacher in the implementation of the student Individual Education Plan, including student accommodations and modifications.
  • Assist the teacher in preparing materials and collecting and recording data.
  • Participate as a contributing member of a collaborative team.
  • Assist the teacher in implementing behavioral and social skills programs as designed and supervised by certificated staff.
  • Under the supervision of certificated staff, implement the district de-escalation and soft-restraint techniques as needed.
  • Assist students with physical and mobility needs and personal care.
  • Assist secondary students with pre-vocational and transition activities.
  • Manage student equipment and assistive technology as needed.
  • Supervise and promote safety of students in multiple settings.
  • Administer, monitor, and document medication following the District policy/procedures and student health care plan, as needed.
  • Demonstrate agility; ability to kneel, transfer, and lift students; provide toileting care (including diapering).
  • Feed students using G-tube, suctioning, and follow medication protocols.
  • Follow multiple service care plans (e.g., BIPs, OT, PT, Health Care Plans).
  • Follow PT lifting and transferring directives; safely use mobility and positioning equipment.
  • Learn to use Assistive Technology devices (communication devices, computers, technology).
  • Implement individualized instructional and sensory plans.
  • Support communication needs (AAC devices, communication boards).
  • Maintain safety and health documentation as directed.
  • Collect and record student data as directed by the teacher or specialist to support progress monitoring and decision-making.
