About The Position

Spokane Public Schools is seeking a dedicated Paraeducator to provide continuous, individualized support to a specifically assigned student with medical, mobility, physical care, safety, or access needs. This role is crucial for ensuring the student can safely access and participate in educational programming throughout the school day. The paraeducator will assist with the student's mobility, positioning, transfers, lifting, physical access, and daily care needs across various school environments. This includes carrying out delegated medical and health care procedures, supporting personal care and toileting, and assisting the student in accessing instruction, transportation, transitions, meals, and other daily activities. The position requires implementing individualized student support plans, utilizing adaptive equipment and assistive technology, monitoring and documenting student data, and maintaining communication with relevant staff. Training in CPI, de-escalation, medical, and student-specific safety is required, along with the physical ability to perform intensive physical support responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Must provide high school diploma (or equivalent) AND 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited college, AA or BA degree, OR pass an academically rigorous assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  • Must complete Core Competencies within one year if hired into a Paraeducator position (refer to the ESS Collective Bargaining Agreement).
  • Demonstrated interest in working with students with a broad range of disabilities.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to aggressive and physical behaviors.
  • Have successfully completed or be willing to complete the District de-escalation/soft restraint training.
  • Must demonstrate initial competency level as measured by instructor observation.
  • Willing and physically capable of kneeling, bending, and working or sitting on the floor with students; running after students, based on student needs.
  • Provide personal care assistance to students including, but not limited to, feeding, tube feeding (with training), toileting and diapering, based on student needs.
  • Must pass the District strength and agility screening test, when necessary and based on student needs.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Heavier lifting will utilize a two-person lift or assistive devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a positive, professional, and confidential manner.
  • Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions, carry out routines, and implement interventions as directed by certificated staff or supervisors.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Proficiency in basic communication skills and ability to see, hear, and listen to the teacher and students throughout the classroom or school settings in order to supervise and maintain a safe environment for a diverse group of students.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrate physical ability to perform lifting, transfers, repositioning, toileting, and other intensive physical support responsibilities throughout the workday.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in core academic areas designed by the teachers/specialists.
  • Assist the special education teacher/general education teacher in the implementation of the student Individual Education Plan, including student accommodations and modifications.
  • Assist the teacher in preparing materials and collecting and recording data.
  • Participate as a contributing member of a collaborative team.
  • Assist the teacher in implementing behavioral and social skills programs as designed and supervised by certificated staff.
  • Under the supervision of certificated staff, implement the district de-escalation and soft-restraint techniques as needed.
  • Assist students with physical and mobility needs and personal care.
  • Assist secondary students with pre-vocational and transition activities.
  • Manage student equipment and assistive technology as needed.
  • Supervise and promote safety of students in multiple settings.
  • Administer, monitor, and document medication following the District policy/procedures and student health care plan, as needed.
  • Provide continuous, individualized support to a specifically assigned student whose disability-related medical, mobility, physical care, safety, or access needs require dedicated assistance throughout the school day to safely access and participate in educational programming.
  • Provide consistent direct support for a specifically assigned student’s mobility, positioning, transfers, lifting, physical access, and daily care needs across school environments.
  • Carry out delegated student-specific medical and health care procedures as trained, including G-tube feeding, suctioning, seizure response, and other approved health supports.
  • Support ongoing personal care and toileting needs while maintaining student dignity, privacy, and safety.
  • Assist the assigned student in accessing instruction, transportation, transitions, meals, recess, and other daily school activities.
  • Implement individualized student support plans including Health Care Plans, IEPs, 504 plans, OT/PT guidance, Behavior Intervention Plans, and safety plans with consistency and fidelity.
  • Utilize adaptive equipment, mobility devices, lifts, positioning tools, and Assistive Technology specific to the assigned student as trained.
  • Monitor, collect, and document student-specific data as directed to assist teams in monitoring effectiveness of support and adjusting interventions.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with case managers, related service providers, nursing staff, and administrators regarding implementation of the student’s supports.
  • Complete required CPI, de-escalation, medical, and student-specific safety training.
