About The Position

Capital Health is seeking an Orthopedic Trauma APP- PRN to join their team. This role involves examining, diagnosing, and treating patients under the supervision of a licensed physician. Responsibilities include preparing casts or splints, suturing small wounds, interpreting medical tests, and prescribing medications as needed. The APP will serve as the first line of medical care, referring patients to physicians or arranging hospital/clinic transfers when necessary. This position is part of the Capital Health Medical Group, which comprises over 600 physicians and providers offering comprehensive care across the region.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program, approved by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • One year experience working with primary care management or acute care preferred.
  • AHA ACLS-Adv Cardiac Life Supp
  • AHA BLS - Healthcare Provider
  • Physician Assistant License
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Possesses strong management and leadership skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based practice to develop and implement standards of practice that guide practice improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Performs histories and physical examinations, ongoing patient assessments and some critical care procedures.
  • Participates in daily patient rounds with physicians, facilitates pre-operative and post-operative patient care.
  • Assists with admission work-ups and/or consults to facilitate care across the continuum.
  • Initiates, monitors, alters and orders treatments including but not limited to device placement, physical and occupational therapy, home health referral, and discharge planning.
  • Re-evaluates the patient throughout the hospitalization and modifies plan of care as needed in collaboration with clinical staff.
  • Completes transfer of care notes when transferring patients to another medical service.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age and development of the patient.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as indicated for diagnosis and management of problems.
  • Completes wound assessments, initiates basic skin care orders.
  • Orders laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies that will assist with the medical management; explains the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipates effects of treatments, and diagnostics and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
  • Participates in the hospital Quality Improvement process.
  • Contributes to development and revision of patient care standards and policies as needed to optimize clinical practice.
  • Assists Physician by performing individualized surgical care management before, during and after surgery.
  • Assists with the positioning, prepping and draping of the patient or perform these independently, if so directed by the surgeon.
  • Assists the surgeon with case, including providing retraction of tissue for optimal visualization and appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique, assists in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use and application of appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement of ties, placement of suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other measure as directed by the surgeon.
  • Uses electrocautery mono and bi-polar, clamp, ligate, and cut tissue per surgeon’s directive.
  • Affords the surgeon the best possible exposure of the anatomy incident to the operation.
  • Assists the surgeon in identifying any structure which should not be ligated and keeps these structures from the moves of the surgeon.
  • Assists in closure of the incision including tying off bleeders, applying sutures and wound dressing and performs any and all tasks required of him/her by the surgeon incident to the particular procedure.
  • Practices correct operating room etiquette.
  • Evaluates and implements the plan of care.
  • Possesses thorough understanding of appropriate instruments pertinent to the surgical case.
  • Complies with all relevant statutes, regulations and institutional policies pertaining to the role of the first assistant.
  • Works effectively and in harmony as part of the operative team.
  • Applies principles of asepsis and infection control knowledgeably and skillfully.
  • Recognizes changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Recognizes potential emergency situations or surgical hazards and initiates preventative or corrective measures in a timely manner.
  • Performs proficiently and calmly in all emergencies.
  • Assists with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life-threatening events in the operating room.
  • Responsible for case preparation to include schedule review, posting slip review to verify necessary equipment to be available and complete along with patient images and other necessary information.
  • Working within scope of license, develops and implements nursing plan of care for patients.
  • Communicates the plan of care to patients as prescribed by physician: test results, scheduling of specialized tests and treatment modalities, prescription drug instructions and other patient education.
  • Documents treatment in medical record appropriately.
