About The Position

The Ophthalmic Scribe is a member of the eye care team who assists ophthalmologists and optometrists by documenting patient encounters and maintaining accurate medical records. The role involves real-time transcription and administrative support during clinical visits. Scribes may also assist with patient care as directed by the physician, including duties of an Ophthalmic Assistant and/or Technician.

Requirements

• Strong typing and data-entry skills, with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Familiarity with medical practice management and electronic medical record software.

Nice To Haves

• Completion of a medical scribe training program or previous experience as a medical scribe.
• High school diploma or GED.
• IJCAHPO Ophthalmic Scribe Certification.

Responsibilities

• Accurately and efficiently document patient medical history, chief complaints, examination findings, and treatment plans in electronic health records or other designated systems.
• Review patient records for accuracy and completeness, including inconsistencies, missing information, and proper coding.
• Prepare examination rooms with necessary instruments, supplies, and patient education materials.
• Follow legal and regulatory requirements, including HIPAA guidelines, to protect patient confidentiality and privacy.
• Work closely with ophthalmologists and optometrists to transcribe and enter information communicated verbally or in writing, ensuring clarity, coherence, and compliance with established protocols.
• Demonstrate knowledge of medical coding and billing processes.
• Perform other duties as necessary.
