The Oncology RN works on a 24-bed, all-private unit devoted to holistic care for cancer patients and their families. The role offers opportunities to develop critical-thinking skills and perform head-to-toe assessments, administer chemotherapy, manage pain, and provide specialized cancer care. A basic understanding of dysrhythmias is required because some oncology patients may need cardiac monitoring. Nurses work with a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, dietitians, social workers, and massage therapists. New graduate nurses are welcome. The Oncology Nurse assesses and identifies patient needs, implements appropriate interventions, and establishes and maintains a plan for delivering nursing care. The nurse ensures care activities address patient problems, performs technical aspects of care competently, provides compassionate care, and serves as a resource to patients and families throughout all stages of the cancer journey.
