About The Position

Savista partners with healthcare organizations to navigate challenges in healthcare and improve their financial strength by implementing integrated revenue cycle and registry solutions. This role is responsible for completing clinical data abstraction for all reportable & non-reportable primary sites of cancer according to reporting and timeliness guidelines established by the CoC, SEER, State Registries and other Standard Setters as required. The Oncology Data Specialist - Abstractor will review EMR to identify cancer cases and abstract details including patient demographics, tumor location/size, diagnosis, treatment (surgery, chemo, radiation), and outcomes. They will abstract data into specialized medical software with supporting narrative information and track patients throughout their lifetime to document health, treatment, and progression of disease. This role provides cancer incidence, treatment, and outcome information to appropriate databases, ensuring data accuracy and completeness. The specialist will also participate in QA reviews, correct errors, manage databases, ensure data quality, run reports, and participate in special projects. They may also coordinate required submissions from the State Registry and CoC. This position requires a secure, HIPAA-compliant home office with high-speed internet access and experience with remote access setup and troubleshooting. While the position is remote, occasional onsite work may be required.

Requirements

  • Active ODS-C (Oncology Data Specialist – Certified) credential.
  • Knowledge of latest guidelines from standard setters (CoC, SEER, and NAACCR), and the ability to apply them accurately.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and work with time constraints.
  • Ability to multi-task and be flexible to adjust assignments as priorities change.
  • Effective communication skills with supervisors and peers and appropriate communication with clients.
  • Ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work effectively within the role, independently and with other team members.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to grow technical competencies.
  • High-speed internet access and experience with remote access, set-up, and troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Secure home office HIPAA compliant.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 2 years of current abstracting experience in a cancer registry.
  • Experience in CoC-accredited or comprehensive cancer programs.

Responsibilities

  • Complete clinical data abstraction for all reportable & non-reportable primary sites of cancer according to reporting and timeliness guidelines.
  • Maintain Active ODS-C certification.
  • Meet productivity standards and quality benchmarks while assuring confidentiality, accuracy, and timeliness of cancer-related health information.
  • Stay up-to-date on all current state and national reporting guidelines.
  • Comply with all Savista/client HIPAA and other privacy requirements and regulations.
  • Maintain compliance with client’s abstracting policies and procedures.
  • Participate in training, CEU activities, and continuous learning initiatives.
  • Review EMR to identify cancer cases and abstract details including patient demographics, tumor location/size, diagnosis, treatment (surgery, chemo, radiation), and outcomes.
  • Abstract data into specialized medical software with supporting narrative information for patient demographics, diagnostic procedures, history and extent of disease, treatments, outcomes, follow-up data, physicians, and related information from various medical records.
  • Track patients throughout their lifetime to document patient’s health, treatment and progression of disease.
  • Provide cancer incidence, treatment and outcome information to appropriate databases.
  • Ensure that data is accurate and complete.
  • Participate in QA reviews and incorporate feedback to support skill development.
  • Correct errors as needed.
  • Manage databases, ensure data quality, and run reports for internal and external use.
  • Participate in special projects and studies, as assigned.
  • Escalate clinical or technical questions appropriately.
  • Participate in training less experienced peers and participate in QA activities and peer reviews.
  • Monitor productivity as needed.
  • Coordinate required submissions from the State Registry and CoC.
