About The Position

Performs general non-sworn officer duties for the County's juvenile detention facility working with juveniles. The principal function is to ensure the safety and security of the County juvenile detention center, working under the general direction of a Department supervisor. Work is performed subject to stringent state and county legal guidelines. This position may be assigned to on-call and/or part-time status (less than 20 hours per week), requiring shift availability on short notice and 24-hour availability. The work environment involves potential personal danger and health hazards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Idaho POST certification within one year of hire date.
  • Idaho driver's license.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Assistance with Medications Certification as soon as POST Certification is complete.
  • Ability to monitor inmates to ensure safety and security.
  • Ability to operate specialized detention equipment.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to maintain, interpret, and produce records, logs, documentation, and reports.
  • Ability to escort inmates to and from facilities and appointments.
  • Ability to deal verbally and/or physically with uncooperative, distraught, mentally ill and hostile inmates.
  • Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to unusual medical, physical, or mental conditions of inmates.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to understand and apply departmental, state, and local law enforcement procedures, policies, rules and regulations.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, recognize dangers, and determine proper action.

  • Some experience in a detention facility is preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • May be subject to polygraph examination.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors the activities of staff and inmates to ensure safety, security, and adherence to standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Communicates effectively with other employees via radio, email, verbal, and written forms.
  • Ensures the rights of inmates are protected.
  • Processes new inmates, including verifying charges, fingerprinting, photography, physical searches, record preparation, data entry, housing assignment, and clothing issuance.
  • Performs release duties, verifying court orders and related paperwork.
  • Maintains facility security by patrolling secure areas, monitoring electronic doors, radio traffic, and security systems.
  • Monitors fire alarm emergency panels and advises Detention Deputies of emergencies.
  • Issues keys to staff, completes key control inventory, and ensures key return.
  • Searches for and seizes weapons, drugs, and contraband, requiring knowledge of various forms.
  • Handles and secures evidence according to proper procedures.
  • Responds to fire alarms and assists with evacuations.
  • Monitors inmate behavior in various situations including education, housing, recreation, meals, showers, and interactions.
  • Responds to back-up calls to control violent and resistive inmates using appropriate force and restraint methods.
  • Performs census counts at prescribed intervals.
  • Monitors and logs or assists in the distribution of medications (in the absence of Shift Supervisor).
  • Monitors and logs or assists in the distribution of mail and personal hygiene items.
  • Performs perimeter security checks.
  • Supervises inmate hygiene, including showers, clean clothing, and laundry.
  • Responds to inmate requests for medical assistance.
  • Maintains logs, records, reports, and required documentation.
  • Investigates incidents, prepares reports, and may testify in court.
  • Coordinates inmate scheduling for court appearances, evaluations, and interviews.
  • Transports and escorts inmates to court hearings, legal proceedings, and medical appointments.
  • Picks up, transports, and assists in serving inmate meals.
  • Determines if inmates are ill or injured and obtains medical assistance.
  • Performs all work duties in accordance with federal, state, County, and Department statutes, laws, ordinances, policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Works non-traditional hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Is on call after regular work hours to respond to emergency situations.
  • Is on call 24/7 to respond to fill a shift as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
