Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of five (5) years dealing with the public, preferably supervisory experience
  • Must work with tact and professionalism
  • Combination of education and experience could waive specific requirement.
  • Current and valid Colorado Driver’s License
  • Self Defense Training
  • Notary Public Certification
  • CPR Certification
  • First Aid Certification

Nice To Haves

  • Corrections/detention courses from an accredited college preferred
  • Current Colorado State Peace Officer (POST) Certification (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Receive and incarcerate inmates, preventing escape or riot and enforce all laws, rules, procedures, and regulations of the Detention Center.
  • Provide for the personal and hygienic welfare of the inmates.
  • Transport inmates, in a secured status as directed by the courts, outside the Detention Center.
  • Log and document all Detention Center happenings including disruptions, inmate status, property records, medical records, and behavior issues.
  • Ability and willingness to work shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • The primary location of employment for this position is the designated Delta County office with the exception of required duties that are to be performed off site as necessary. The employee is required to perform the majority (generally, at least 95%) of assigned duties from this designated office location to allow for client, customer and coworker access and collaboration, unless prior written approval for an alternative arrangement, such as temporary remote work, has been granted by the employee's direct supervisor and/or department head and maintained in the employee personnel file.
  • Reliable and predictable attendance and punctuality are considered essential functions of this job. Employees are expected to be at their work area and ready to work at the scheduled start time to ensure consistent service delivery and operational efficiency.
  • Receive food trays, inspect for quantity and contraband, distribute, account for utensils, collect and re-inspect.
  • Administrate work release programs, including verifying authorization, account for all belongings in and out, physical inspection, verify work attendance, receive and record pay, and secure inmate. Verification of alcohol consumption through usage of preliminary breath test.
  • Provide fingerprint service for courts and government agencies.
  • Enforce Detention Center and inmate rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Assist inmates to secure counseling and other social services and related activities.
  • Work with Vocational Technical students studying corrections.
  • Maintain Standard Operating Procedures Manual and train new officers as required.
  • Transport inmates for various purposes in a secured manner using restraining devices as required.
  • Provide co-worker support and team support, respecting and cooperating with fellow officers in the performance of duties.
  • Administer legal documents authorizing incarceration, transport and release of inmates.
  • Record and type the log and count sheet, which are permanent records of all jail activity.
  • Count sheets are done on the computer also other information on inmates is looked up for other agencies.
  • Study policy and procedure manual, pass-a-longs, memorandums, logs and incident reports.
  • Know when and how to deal with a crisis and when to intervene. Return inmate as much as possible to a pre-crisis level. Watch and listen for signs of suicide, fights, or injury by one inmate to another or an Officer.
  • Do searches on inmates, cells, personal items, and mail.
  • Cooperate with judge and other law enforcement agencies as required in handling inmates.
  • Control inmates from stations/posts or by patrolling in the housing areas to include individual rooms, corridors, common areas, and work or recreation areas.
  • Escort inmates to various facilities throughout Colorado, such as court, mental health facilities, hospitals, other correctional facilities, etc.
  • Keep continued count of inmates assigned.
  • Inspect for sanitary conditions, fire, and safety hazards.
  • Enforce policy and procedure, inmate rules and regulations, make verbal or written report of significant violations or irregularities to superiors.
  • Physically suppress promptly, any fights or escapes undertaken by inmates.
  • Order and distribute cleaning and sanitation supplies; deliver commissary orders, mail, food, doctor-ordered medications; pick up and deliver personal laundry and bedding for inmates.
  • Monitor and assist visits from attorney, clergy, guests and agency representatives.
  • Receive document and secure bail moneys and bonds.
  • Receive arrested persons, complete booking sheets, medical, screening, property inventory, fingerprints, photograph, enter in permanent booking log book, search, issue personal items and clothing, and escort to cell.
  • Control Room duties to include prepare daily log of all activities; monitor fire alarm system, operate telephones and electric doors, monitor and operate the closed circuit TV systems, and intercom system, monitor emergency court alarms, emergency generator, maintain security, prepare release papers; prepare count sheet, pass-a-long, and court sheets.
  • Complete time sheets and various reports as assigned.
  • Answer phones, take and relay messages, operate radio.
  • Work well with other agencies, co-workers, staff and supervisor in a cooperative atmosphere showing respect and support.
  • Should the Board of County Commissioners or another authorized representative issue a local disaster declaration in Delta County, all Delta County employees may be called upon to serve as disaster service workers.
