Ocean Engineering Manager

Leidos•Poulsbo, WA

About The Position

Leidos is seeking an Ocean Engineering Manager to lead engineering efforts within the Undersea Systems Division. The role supports ocean engineering systems, primarily involving ocean and mechanical design for acoustic measurement facilities, deployed deep- and shallow-ocean systems, and the operations and maintenance infrastructure supporting those systems. The manager leads a team of ocean, mechanical, and related engineers supporting customer missions. The division delivers undersea technologies across sensor networks, unmanned systems, and tactical platforms. The position combines direct team management with hands-on engineering support for the production, integration, testing, and sustainment of complex maritime systems. It includes planning and supporting on-water recovery, deployment, and maintenance; developing and reviewing systems from prototype through manufacturing and installation; identifying and mitigating technical risks; resolving production and field issues; and maintaining the technical documentation and configuration needed throughout program lifecycles. The role also supports fielded systems to help keep them reliable, supportable, and mission ready.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture, or another related discipline.
  • Experience with underwater or marine engineering and the unique applications of working in a maritime environment.
  • Experience with SolidWorks software.
  • Working ability to operate OrcaFlex, MathCAD, Matlab, and other analysis tools.
  • Experience in undersea hardware system development.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and establish collaborative relationships with government customers, technical staff, senior managers, and peers.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, along with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to obtain a Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with cranes and weight-handling operations at sea.
  • Experience evaluating the suitability of maritime assets for project requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Ocean Engineering team members as direct reports, including hiring, firing, promotions, raises, retention, and performance feedback.
  • Provide hands-on engineering support for production, integration, testing, and sustainment of complex maritime systems.
  • Develop detailed on-water execution plans for recovery, deployment, and maintenance of complex in-water systems.
  • Design or review ocean engineering systems for technology development and demonstration, from prototype development through manufacturing and installation.
  • Identify program technical risks and develop risk mitigation and technology maturation plans.
  • Resolve production and field issues through technical investigation, root-cause analysis, and practical engineering solutions.
  • Develop and maintain mechanical drawings, specifications, bills of material, work instructions, and other technical documentation.
  • Work with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, technicians, and suppliers to address material, component, and assembly challenges.
  • Support configuration changes, obsolescence management, component substitutions, repairs, and upgrades throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Participate in system integration, testing, troubleshooting, and disposition of nonconforming hardware.
  • Provide engineering support for fielded systems to help ensure products remain reliable, supportable, and mission ready.
