About The Position

The Nurse Extern delivers high-quality, patient-centered care by performing delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), the Nurse Extern assists the nursing staff in providing care consistent with the extern’s skills and training and the department’s needs. The role also supports a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment. Nurse Externs are enrolled and in good standing in an accredited nursing school and may perform higher-level procedures after achieving competency.

This position is with Parkridge Medical Center, a 270+ bed hospital near downtown Chattanooga offering diagnostic, medical, and surgical services, including intensive care, cardiovascular surgery, cancer treatment, orthopedic and spine surgery, rehabilitation, neurosurgery, OB-GYN, a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and behavioral health treatment for children and adults.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, obtained and maintained within the time frames required by hospital policy.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited RN nursing program and in good standing.
• Must have completed the first nursing semester to be considered for Nurse Extern, or be a CNA in the first semester of an RN program.
• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to provide appropriate care for the patient populations served in the department.
• Communicate pertinent information to appropriate individuals.
• Deliver compassionate, holistic care while supporting patients’ rights and dignity.
• Document patient care information in the appropriate computer screens.
• Assist assigned patients with activities of daily living.
• Assist nursing staff with delegated patient care under the supervision of an RN and within the extern’s skills and training.
• Help maintain a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment.
